Certification through testing is not required for dog groomers.  In an effort to improve the quality and safety of grooming, several organizations establish criteria and provide testing for groomers who voluntarily choose to demonstrate their abilities.

Certified Master Groomer, CMG, is the highest level achieved in testing, and signifies test completion in all breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club.  The testing organizations are

• International Society of Canine Cosmetology

• Professional Pet Groomers Association

• National Dog Groomers Association

• Illinois State Professional Groomers Association

Certifying organizations suggest you verify any groomer's claim of certification.  You should ask what organization(s) certified them and what certifications they have earned.  Check here for a list of Barb's certifications.
